Title: What should Information Security Professionals know and do about Privacy?
Presenter: Peter Cullen (45 min)
Biodata of speaker
Peter is the Chief Privacy Strategist, Advanced Strategies & Policy of Microsoft Corp. As Chief Privacy Strategist, Peter Cullen is directly responsible for managing the development and implementation of programs which enhance the
privacy of Microsoft products, services, processes and systems, both internally and worldwide. Cullen reports to Scott Charney, chief
Trustworthy Computing strategist, and brings more than a decade of experience in privacy and data protection work to Microsoft's Trustworthy
Computing initiative. In this position, he will capitalize on his background in privacy and data protection practices, and their relationship to customer value,
to be an effective advocate for strong and innovative consumer privacy safeguards.
Previously, Cullen was the corporate privacy officer for the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), with the responsibility for influencing initiatives relevant
to the RBC Financial Group's strategic approach to privacy, and coordinating the management of privacy across RBC Financial Group. While
at RBC, Cullen established the Corporate Privacy Group and its practices, a first for a Canadian financial institution. He also implemented an
integrated privacy management/compliance structure for RBC's U.S.operations, which included six affiliate companies. As a result, Cullen
helped RBC become recognized as a North American leader in the area of privacy management. His 27 years at RBC also included service in retail
banking, at both the field and head office levels, including customer service and operations, customer loyalty, human resources and branch
operations and training.
Cullen holds a Master of Business Administration from Richard Ivey School of Business (University of Western Ontario). He is a founding member of
the Association of Corporate Privacy Officers, and is on the board of TRUSTe (http://truste.org/), a group dedicated to privacy and trust on the
Internet. He is married with two adult children. In his spare time, Cullen enjoys practicing his passion for the culinary arts.
