SIG^2 Inaugural Event Thanks for members' interest and support at the society's inaugural event. Due to your overwhelming support, the society has signed up around 140 members. We would like to take this opportunity to address some of the feedback to the event which we have heard. If you have further feedback about the event, and/or suggestions on how to improve future events, pls email us. Congestion at registration: We under-estimated the size of the crowd, such that our logistical preparations were not able to process quickly the registration of the large crowd. Especially because this occasion was also to sign up new members, where we were also obtaining particulars and issuing receipts, which took more time.Solutions: In future events, we would obtain a better preliminary estimate of the participation rate, so as to be able to provide the right level of logistics capacity, and to cater enough refreshments. Now that we have the membership info, we would issue membership cards, to be collected by members at the next event. For subsequent events, members only need to show their cards, and not have to spend time submitting their particulars at the registration desk. Invited speakers did not appear: We received feedback that some members came to the event specially to listen to particular speakers, but were disappointed. The background is that we do have an understanding with Lance Spitzner that he would try his best to come, but it was tentative and we cannot promise. It was stated as such in our program sheet distributed prior to the event, that it was tentative and based on "best-effort", and the program may be amended due to unforeseen circumstances. We also do hope that members can understand that because we aim to keep the society's expenses low, thus we are not able to guarantee speakers' appearance. Solutions: In future, where possible we would obtain the *lastest* confirmation of the appearance of the invited speakers, and advise members accordingly. We would also indicate more clearly which part of the program remains tentative. However, members will also be glad to know that we are trying to plan subsequent activities with such highly sought-after speakers, perhaps smaller workshops or chit-chat sessions with them. A presentation too technical: Some feedback was heard that the "Cable Modem Security" presentation was too technical and not interesting. There was however, other feedback which said that such a technical presentation was useful and refreshingly objective.Solutions: Thus, we understand that there are different needs and preferences among our members, and we would try to organize different presentations, and in fact different activities, to cater to all these, where we can. Either way, your feedback is important to us, in letting us know whether you are comfortable with program we are providing or not. More interaction time with experts: Some members mentioned that they would appreciate more time after the event, to interact with experts and other ITSec practitioners working in their respective specialized fields. Solutions: We recognize that such an opportunity for networking and technical sharing would be invaluable. We would try to cater for this, and to encourage people to stay around and mingle after the event for such purpose. More announcement of future events: There was feedback that members wanted to hear more announcements about upcoming activities at the inaugural event. Solutions: We are excited by this enthusiasm. At the inaugural event, we have announced firmly the Crypto contest, which would be posted online soon. There are a few other activities in various stages of being planned or organized, and we will provide more news about these when they are firmed up. Members would be assured to know that we would give more ample notice for this, compared to the relatively short notice period preceding the inaugural event. But once again, thank you for your support !Updated: 26/10/2002 webmaster@security.org.sg |
